Amberley Museum

Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre, based in a chalk quarry operated by Pepper & Sons. Operating on the 2ft gauge narrow gauge railway we see Hunslet Works Number HE8969 No.12, built 1980. The locomotive formerly operated at BAE Bishopton, Glasgow.

Railway Gala

An intensive days services on the Amberley Narrow Gauge line, with steam loco hauled passenger trains hauled by fresh from overhaul Bagnall 'Peter' and Groudle Glen Railway 'Polar Bear'.

Diesel and battery electric engines were used on demonstration freight trains along the mainline and in the sidings, locomotives featured include ‘Peldon’ Fowler ‘Resilient’ Diesel Locomotive of 1936, Ransomes & Rapier RR80/1936, Hibberd Y-type Planet FH3627/1953, Hudson Hunslet "Blue Star", Hunslet HE8969/1980, Wingrove & Rogers BEV T8033/1979. On static display we also see Decauville 0-4-0WT 1126/1947 "Barbouilleur", 3ft 2 1/4inch gauge Fletcher Jennings 0-4-0T 172L/1880 "Townsend Hook" and Orenstein & Koppel 7269/1936 "Monty" and 1ft 10in gauge Wm Spence Guinness 0-4-0T No.23/1920" ex-Guinness Brewery, Dublin, Eire.

 

The monorail was also in operation. Road Machines [Drayton] Ltd Serial RM9514 (1960) was used at Bishops Waltham Waste Water Works to transport sewage sludge and was donate to Amberley by Southern Water Service Ltd in 1991. The monorail runs of double-flanged wheels and is hydraylically driven through gearing.
